Members from Chichupac and Neighboring Communities vs. Guatemala

Guatemala City, 21 March 2017.  A delegation of victims from Chichupac, Xeabaj and El tablón communities from Rabinal, Baja Verapaz held a press conference to announce the last judgment from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in the case “Members from Chichupac and Neighboring Communities vs. Guatemala”, dated 30 November 2016.

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights condemned the Guatemalan State for severe violations against those communities and ordered to investigate forced disappearance, torture, rape, and acts against the Maya Achí people. At the press conference also participated victims from the cases Masacre de Plan de Sánchez and Masacre de Río Negro (the Inter-American Court of Human Rights already dictated sentence for these cases respectively in 2004 and 2012). The delegation also gathered with representatives from the Ministerio Público (Public Ministry) and Organismo Judicial (Judicial System) to submit the judgment and demand justice and fulfillment of the reparation measurements. This activity was held in the context of the extraordinary sessions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in Guatemala City.
