For Guatemala, 2018 began with bad omens when the dismissal of two high officials committed to the fight against corruption was known. We urge the UN Secretary General with this letter not to respond to the plea of the President of Guatemala and his Minister of Foreign Affairs to change the current Commissioner of CICIG. This would not only mean a threat to the cases that the MP and CICIG are jointly involved in, but also to the people who defend human rights and the rule of law. It would also be a blow to the hope of the citizens who took to the streets in 2015 in defense of democracy.
The Observatory of Judicial Independence is a tool to monitor and analyse the internal and external factors that threaten judicial independence in Guatemala.
